Dinner with the Ayatollah

The Forty-second Story

Iran was to send its envoy to Lebanon.
I decided to have him meet Ayatollah Bahjat to get some advice from him.
At about 11:30 P.M., we arrived at Ayatollah Bahjat’s home. To me, this meeting was so necessary that I knocked on the door although we had not arranged any appointment in advance.
He himself opened the door, as if he was waiting for us!
We entered the house, and Ayatollah Bahjat brought us tea, we also had a short talk.
At about 12:30 P.M., he asked, “Have you eaten dinner?”
Involuntarily we said, “No!”
Ayatollah Bahjat went slowly downstairs to the kitchen to prepare some food for us.
I pulled the kitchen curtain back and saw him putting a pan on the stove and breaking some eggs in it. Then he put everything in a tray but could not pick it up, so he dragged it to the curtain.
At 01:00 A.M., the dinner was ready: scrambled eggs, some vegetables, a bowl of diced cucumber, a bowl of olives, and a bowl of dates, all put in the tray carefully. He prepared them all himself.
We were too ashamed to eat them.
Seeing our shame, he sat down and started eating so that we could eat comfortably.
At 02:00 A.M., after we finished eating, he brought us tea.
If someone had not known and seen him hosting us, he would have not identified him.
Finally, Iran's envoy went to Lebanon. After he returned, he said, “I did not err a bit on how to spend the Islamic public treasury. I think it was because I had been blessed with the food Ayatollah Bahjat prepared for us.”
