His Simplicity
The Forty-third Story
In the cold of winter, Ayatollah Bahjat wore two pairs of socks.
I gave him wool socks,
There was a medical problem in his right foot’s thumb (his big toe);
When he performed ablution, I could often see it bandaged.
He did not say anything to us.
A few days passed,
And whenever I saw him, I thought about his right foot,
I liked him to wear the socks that I had given him.
But after three days, he gave back the socks and said, “It seems that these socks do not fit me, keep them fro yourself.”
Then he added, “I have paid their Khums, you do not need to pay it.”
I was sure they fitted him, I knew his feet size.
Later I knew the size was not important.
He did not want to wear expensive socks.
